With the rise of automation, remote access, and the ever-expanding Internet of Things (IoT), IT and OT teams are collaborating at an unprecedented rate to strengthen organizational network security. Business operations that rely on machinery and physical processes are no longer disconnected from the world. With a staggering majority of devices – expected to reach more than 75 billion by 2025 [1] – connected to vast networks and the internet, cybersecurity becomes a critical focal point for the age of IoT.

In most organizations, Information Technology (IT) includes the technology used to manage and process information, while Operational Technology (OT) encompasses the devices and technology that interact with the physical world. IT and OT were, for a long time, regarded as two distinct areas of an organization. Nowadays, these two domains are converging with the rise of connected embedded devices in the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT revolution is happening all around us, but the definition of what these ‘things’ are can be fuzzy and often incomplete. The IoT has already experienced significant growth in the past decade and is expected to reach more than 30 billion connected devices by 2022. This business transformation brings along many opportunities for increased productivity, but it also presents challenges since the number of devices in a typical organization’s network is rapidly increasing, these devices are mostly unmanaged, come from a multitude of vendors, use non-standard ope

Forescout provides the device visibility platform for Zero Trust security. The Zero Trust model of information security has become a fixture in both the strategies of enterprise security teams and the roadmaps of security solution developers, and for good reason. Perimeter-focused security architectures that default to high trust levels on the internal network continue to fail disastrously and expensively.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created serious, wide-ranging IT and security challenges for organizations worldwide that must balance continuing to function as normal while reducing their on-premise workforce to limit health risk. However, the situation has also created an opportunity to adapt existing and new cyber defense technology investments. As increasing numbers of employees work from home, new obstacles arise, such as scaling and securing Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and remote access. Most organizations had not previously established or required mature security practices for their VPN networks or their remote workers at the scale they now face. Finding solutions today will help organizations that embrace this turn of events, even after our current situation has passed.

Information security has undergone a sea change in the past 10 years. Compliance mandates in the form of industry standards and Federal rules like NERC, FFIEC, HIPAA/HITECH and PCI-DSS are the new norm. To stay in compliance, IT teams need to be able to keep up with updatesand changes to existing mandates while also being prepared for new ones. To maximize efficiency, manage risk and reduce potential violations due to compliance failure, organizations need to implement security tools whose features support multiple specifications within and across different compliance frameworks.

In a BYOD world, companies can choose to secure and manage the entire mobile device user pool or secure portions of that community. Either way, steps must be taken to prevent unauthorized access to network resources and data loss. Enterprises should consider solutions that allow policies to be applied based on user, device, network, application, and data leakage risks.

The What, Why and How to Employ NAC to Apply Guest Networking, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and Endpoint Security Policies. Many of today's endpoints are neither known nor protected. According to Gartner, enterprises are only aware of 80 percent of the devices on their network. Those 20 percent of unknown devices are inside the perimeter of the network, are unmanaged and provide users with access. They are small, varied and highly mobile, and they are loaded with their own applications, can act as WAPs, and often contain outdated firmware or are jailbroken. Even as the devices are accessing personal applications on the web, they are also accessing corporate resources such as e-mail-all from the very same unmanaged devices, which have not been vetted by the security organization. Smartphones, notebooks, netbooks, iPads, e-readers, gaming consoles and more-the list of personal devices attempting access to employer networks seems to grow every day in what's come to be known as the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) era in networking.

Business wants more fluid access to data while IT organizations must maintain security. As the variety of access and multitude of threats to network resources and sensitive information have grown, so has the need for more flexible and automated ways to effectuate security policies, controls and enforcement. Rarely is this need more keenly felt than at the network endpoint, where people, technology, information assets and requirements for security and compliance meet most directly.
