Modern day industrial operations often span complex IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) infrastructures. In a very standard environment, thousands of devices exist and are increasingly being connected via the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This creates new challenges in securing industrial environments specifically by making cyber- security threats even more difficult to detect, investigate and remediate.

To better understand where enterprises are on their digital journey and what they need from their IT infrastructure, 451 Research polled more than 750 enterprises – specifically, decisionmakers who have responsibility for selecting their company’s IT services – across a range of demographics and countries. Respondents were from companies of more than 500 employees (evenly divided among those with more than 500, more than 1,000 and more than 5,000) with headquarters in the US, UK, Germany, Hong Kong and Australia, and from a range of verticals. Surveys were conducted online. Our goal was to gain a better understanding of enterprise infrastructure deployments: location, goals, requirements and what type of infrastructure contributes to success for these companies. Takeaways: Enterprises that are not transforming risk being left behind. Large enterprises are expanding geographically, putting pressure on IT infrastructure. The network of yesterday is not the network that can take businesses into the future. As mission critical enterprise applications move to the cloud, wide area network (WAN) must adapt to become agile, flexible, and scale rapidly. Leading IT trends such as Internet of Things (IoT), Software as a Service (SaaS), cloud storage, enterprise mobility, emerging transport alternatives, and globalization increase the importance of how network assets are leveraged and how the network is conceptualized. The advantages of public and private data centers and cloud-based applications are significantly diminished if the network is slow, inflexible, and unpredictable. Erratic network performance with high latency, jitter and packet loss can significantly impact user adoption, satisfaction, and overall corporate productivity. As connectivity options continue to emerge, end users are no longer tethered to the office or to the localized applications and services that were trademarks of a primary or branc

Mobile device management (MDM) tools allow companies to connect their employees securely to basic corporate network resources. Enterprise mobility management (EMM) goes a step further by enabling secure mobile versions of business-critical applications and data loss prevention to protect corporate information. But in today's workplace, employees and businesses deal with a vast variety of devices with different operating systems and form factors, from PCs and laptops, to tablets and smartphones, and now, increasingly wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) endpoints. The solution is unified endpoint management (UEM), which enables organizations to take a consistent approach to manage and secure every endpoint, any app and content, and across deployment use cases from a single holistic platform. Read this whitepaper to uncover VMware AirWatch®'s leading UEM approach that is benefiting organizations tremendously.

In today's hyperconnected and digitized world, cybersecurity has become an important strategic imperative owing to the sophistication of cybercrime. Digital businesses require complex and distributed interactions among people, applications and data - on premise, off-premise, on mobile devices and in the cloud. The result is an increase in the attack surfaces that are hard to protect and defend. As the perimeter continues to diminish, visibility into the environment gets tougher. Operational Technology (OT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) massively expand the scope of security strategy and operations. When a massively distributed fleet of autonomous devices that can make decisions is combined, directly affecting the physical state of people and things, there is a considerable risk to manage. This issue is not limited to the chief information security officer (CISO) but needs the involvement and sponsorship of the leadership and the board.

Cisco estimates that the Internet of Everything (IoE) — the networked connection of people, process, data, and things — will generate $19 trillion in Value at Stake for the private and public sectors combined between 2013 and 2022. More than 42 percent of this value — $8 trillion — will come from one of IoE’s chief enablers, the Internet of Things (IoT). Defined by Cisco as “the intelligent connectivity of physical devices, driving massive gains in efficiency, business growth, and quality of life,” IoT often represents the quickest path to IoE value for private and public sector organizations. This paper combines original and secondary research, as well as economic analysis, to provide a roadmap for maximizing value from IoT investments. It also explains why, in the worlds of IoT and IoE, the combination of edge computing/analytics and data center/cloud is essential to driving actionable insights that produce improved business outcomes.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is connecting our world in ways that were unimaginable 10 years ago—collecting data on everything we do and using it to streamline our daily activities. In doing so, IoT is changing the way that consumers think about service. Service organizations must be prepared to support these new customer expectations to ensure continued satisfaction to strengthen and foster loyalty. Additionally, IoT is making its way into the enterprise, especially among organizations in industries like utilities, oil and gas, medical devices, manufacturing and telecommunications. Connected devices enable more efficient processes for maintenance and repair by constantly providing information on machines’ performance, environmental conditions, and possible failures. For example, a connected washing machine in a customer’s home could automatically send out an error report to the manufacturer when it experiences a failure. This is where field service management comes in.

Kevin Ashton founded the Auto-ID Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has done pioneering work in radio-frequency identification and sensor technology. Ashton is known for coining the term “the Internet of Things” to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors. In 2015, he spoke at a European customer service conference and noted that field service management is the first industry being transformed by IoT. Some people in the industry have noted that the entire IoT concept came from trying to solve field service problems in 1999. IoT’s origin story lies in field service management. Clearly, field service management and IoT are deeply intertwined. But how are the changes being implemented? And how can you benefit from them?
